Apedale's Visit to the Forest of Dean
The Forest of Dean has a long tradition of mining, and a group from Apedale visited some of the freeminers to see how they operate. Freemining is a tradition that goes back 700 years to when Edward I granted miners the right to mine in the Forest of Dean for thier service in undermining castle fortifications. To qualify as a freeminer a person must have been born in the Hundred of St. Braviels and have worked as a miner for a year and a day.
