About

This special attraction was created at the site of Staffordshire's Apedale Mine, one of the last working coal mines in Staffordshire. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff are always there to help you enjoy a time of discovery and exploration of Apedale Valley's important contribution to the economy and culture of generations of Staffordshire people. During your visit you can experience our underground mine tours , see our free, interesting and informative Museum, and relax in our welcoming café and gift shop.

The centre is set in the unique landscape of Apedale Country Park, near to the village of Chesterton. The site is also home to the Moseley Railway Trust's collection of narrow gauge industrial locomotives.

We are open every day from 10:30am to 4:00pm, although the museum and mine tours are only run at the weekend and Bank Holidays, or by appointment.

Volunteering

If you are interested in helping out at either the centre or the Moseley Railway Trust then please drop us a line via the website. Alternatively, feel free to drop in one weekend for a chat. All you need is enthusiasm and a bit of spare time!

News and Event

MRT Open day 2009

19th June 2009

The Moseley Railway Trust will be holding their 2009 open day on 12th and 13th of September. Trains will be run throughout the day and there are also plans for a variety of stalls, model railways and other exhibitors. The Heritage Center will of course be open as usual, of course. See the MRT website for further details.

Hem Heath Drift Winder

14th March 2009

The centre is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Hem Heath Drift Winder. Weighing 32 Tons, the winder is currently at the Shropshire Mines Trust and should be on the site in May.

Hem Heath Colliery was located near Trentham, North Staffordshire. In the 1970s it merged with neighboring Florence Colliery and a drift was created linking Florence with the surface at Hem Heath where all coal was to be processed. The colliery closed in 1996 and Britannia stadium now stands on the site.

New Brick and Tile Display In Museum

Brick and Tile manufacture is an important part of our local industrial heritage, but is often overshadowed by the more glamorous pottery industry. Our new display, by Gordon Howle and Ken Perkins, provides an insight into the Brick and Tile industry in North Staffordshire. Chesterton has been involved in brick making for well over a century so it is particularly appropriate that we are able to include this exhibit in our museum.
